Newsflash: October Burda Preview Posted!

Our favorite Russian website has posted the full preview of the October Burda!  Overall I have to say there are a lot of things I like, but I didn't really find a standout pattern this time around.  There are lots of things to look at, so let's get to it.

Let's face it - coat patterns are like my form of crack, so I am going to start there.  I love the fall Burdas the best because of all the drool worthy coats.  This issue did not disappoint, giving a very diverse range of style options:

We get a designer pattern coat!  Love the classic lines.

Line drawing - the collar is so cute!

The Vintage pattern in this issue is also a coat.
Not really my style, but I do like some of the details.
The pink jacket from the preview - ok, but not terribly exciting.
I think this military jacket makes up for it though - I love the detail on the cuff!
Another swoon-worthy coat.

I am liking the bell-shaped sleeves.
I still love this!  The collar probably makes it my favorite of the coats in this issue.
I am also liking the dresses in this issue:

Swoon!  So pretty!
Love this too - not too formal, not too casual.
I love the more subtle cowl drape too.
Another pretty dress.  Though it looks more ready for spring than fall...
This isn't exactly my style, but I appreciate the way this dress is shaped.

The line drawing - the seaming and pleating are sorta interesting.
And, of course, I am really liking the knit tops in this issue as well:

Love the gathering on this top.

And it would look great in a print too!

I don't think it matters how many cross over tops I get, always room for another.
Also, the Burda Plus section has some lovely basics this time around:

Love the collar detail.
I get the feeling I might be making this for someone sometime soon-ish.

LOVE these pants.  I would only have to grade down a little bit...

Super classy cape.  Loving the collar.

Great pencil skirt.  This could be a total workhorse pattern.
So, as you can see, there is lots of yummy Burda goodness in this issue.  Of course, these is a lot of Burda crazy too:

I am on the fence with this one...
It looks ok in the fabric

But the line drawing just makes me think "loin cloth."

Bows?  Seriously?

I just... cannot.... There are no words.

Kangaroo pouch?

I do not understand the purpose of the fur.

Fuzzy leather armor.

Ok, this isn't bad....

But the line drawing makes me think "WTH?"
Also, how hot and miserable do these models look?

It is so sunny, today is totally a fur day!

Full-length fur is perfect for 120 degree weather!
(Also, those shoes, what?)

I needs my warm leather... thing... to protect me from the blazing sun!
So yeah, a little bit of crazy in this issue.  But overall I think I like the direction Burda is going.  No snooze-worthy sack dresses.  Classic designs and interesting details.  I might not understand the pastel springy dresses at the start of fall, but I still might want to sew them up at some point.  I would rather see a mix of classic, interesting, and crazy than a full issue of boring.  Overall I have to say I am pretty happy with this issue.  I can't say there is anything I am going to rip out of the magazine and sew up right away, but there are a lot of patterns I am going to consider for the future.

And, finally, it is time to announce the best and worst picks of this issue.  It was a bit difficult to find a stand out pattern this month, but I have finally settled on awarding the Best of BS October 2012 to:

The swoon-worthy metallic dress!
(Ha - and you thought I would go for a coat.)
I feel like Burda hit the nail on the head with this one - the dress could be made in fancy or plain fabric and still look fabulous.  It is something the vintage pattern lovers could enjoy, but the fit is still fairly modern.  It has sleeves for fall.  Overall, best pattern of the bunch.

There were more contenders for the worst pattern than we have seen in recent months, but in the end it was pretty clear BWTF for October should go to:

Crazy weird belt thing!
Honestly, who is going to wear that?

So, there you have it - October Burda.  What do you all think?  Anything you are dying to make?  Did I miss something good?  Feel free to discuss in the comments!

  3. 'Crazy wierd belt thing', over tights, in the right fabric, I see as a cute skating skirt for an adult.

  4. My subscription expired a few months back, but I think I might get the October issue. Like some of those coats (not the ewok stuff though)

  5. Looks like the WTH plaid coat is the same as the shorter jacket whose collar you adore.. Would be very easy too :-)..

    1. Actually the patterns are different - the one I like has distinct seaming and shaping so it is more form fitting, whereas the one with the weird line drawing is actually from the plus section and basically a square with sleeves. It looks easy, but I am betting the one I liked would look better if I actually sewed it together and wore it, despite it clearly being more work.
