My Latest Obsession

It has been hard to ignore the impact that Mad Men has had on sewing and style blogs over the past few years.  I have never really gotten into the show, and while I could appreciate the costuming, somehow it never captured my fancy the way it seemed to the rest of the world.

Indeed, it has been so successful that there were plans for a lot of new 60s-era shows this season, such as the ill-fated (and rightfully so) "The Playboy Club."  However, the show that has captured my attention is the new drama "Pan Am."

I hadn't planned to watch the show, but it was a solitary night and I decided to find something to watch on Hulu while eating dinner.  I don't know what I was expecting, but this show blew me away.  I watched all three currently available episodes in one sitting, and I can't wait for next week.  This show somehow manages to combine a character driven drama with international politics and the height of 60s glamour.  The stewardess are stunningly gorgeous, but are also extremely smart and witty.  The show deals with the personal (pre-flight weigh-ins and molestation by passengers) through the political (Kennedy and the Cold War) in a way that feels masterfully crafted.  Although there may have been almost too much covered too soon, I have thoroughly enjoyed the fast-paced adventure.  I am quite excited by the stories and the characters, and I can't wait for more.  I highly recommend this show - both as an inspiration for style but also as great entertainment.
